Popcorn Anyone?
This past week ideologues on the left and right tried to get Chief Justice Nominee John Roberts to utter words which would coalesce their support or opposition to his nomination. Thus far he seems to have evaded a verbal slip.
Reportedly after intensely questioning Roberts for several days Judiciary Committee Co-Chairman Joseph Biden extended his hand to the nominee after a session saying "You're the best candidate I've ever seen appear before this committee."
I'm sure that grated on the ears of supporters of Justice Ginsburg.
Personal information has always been something the media has wanted to know about nominees.
When Judge Bork was under consideration a reporter contacted the video store in the New England town he spent his summer vacations hoping to find out what videos the Conservative candidate rented.
We learned more than we wanted to know when Anita Hill revealed Justice Thomas's fascination with porn star "Long Dong Silver" during his Senate confirmation hearings.
Yesterday in jest someone queried John Roberts about his favorite movies.
He immediately declared they were "Dr. Zhivago" and "North by Northwest"!
Addendum September 29,2005 4:00 P.M.:
Senator Biden ultimately voted against Roberts for Chief Justice both in Committee on September 22 and in the full Senate on September 29.

No doubt, he's the "best prepared" nominee to ever appear before that committee. I can't wait to see how he votes on the issues. He may, just may, turn out to be another Anthony Kennedy... or not.
It's always going to be difficult to determine what a non judicial experienced nominee really believes when most of his utterances are based on advocacy for particular clients. That's why this guy is all over the place.
The movie questions were the only ones he gave a straight answer on. There is a lot of nuance in his answers. Wasn't that one of the things John Kerry lost the election on? Being nuanced? I guess Republicans want nuance in their judges but not their political candidates.
Mayor Bloomberg evidently thought Roberts was being to nuanced for his tastes.
Biden is saying he expects the Judiciary Committee to vote Roberts out this coming Thursday with the full Senate vote coming the following week.
