The "Unaccounted"

We’ve heard that the New Orleans Police Department has 500 members missing, not resigned, missing. OK, maybe some of them walked off the job in the chaos that followed and are too embarrassed to report back. Maybe a few of them lost their lives in the civil unrest and haven’t been discovered yet. Maybe some are buried under the water and muck from the flood.
Here’s a really scary statistic. Today we learned that the Postal Service has 2,000 of its employees “unaccounted for”. THE POSTAL SERVICE HAS 2,000 OF ITS EMPLOYEES UNACCOUNTED FOR….(approximately 1/3 of its workers in the areas ravaged by the storm 10 days after Katrina passed).
Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
The majority of Americans see the Post Office as a “plum job”.”
You need to score high on a civil service exam to get it for that reason. You have to be fairly bright to work for the US Postal Service.
Approximately 1 out of every 400 Americans works for the Postal Service...or 0.25 % of the population.
Could you get to a phone and let your employer know you’re OK..1-877-477-3273..?..
OR…Is the Katrina disaster far worse than anyone can imagine with regard to losses..

Addendum: September 9, 2005 1:00 P.M.

Two Iowa Postmasters are claiming the number of unaccounted for postal workers is 3,200. They urged workers to contact the Postal Service at 1-877-477-3273.
Meanwhile, Mississippi Regional Postal District Manager James Daily says all of his state's workers are accounted for. "Fortunately we've had no deaths and no serious inuries." he said.

Justice:
Some say the quote never did apply to the Post Office. In the early 20th century when a large central Post Office Building was erected in New York City the officials there wanted something to put up on the "frieze" of the building.
This quote supplied to them was a translation from the Greek Historian Herodotus who wrote this passage describing a messenger system used by the Persians (nowadays the Iranians) in 500 BC.

This story just keeps getting bigger and more devastating. I hadn't even thought about postal employees. Man!

Jip, my father worked for the post office, he delivered mail for many many years. There was so much red tape, backbiting, and pressure on that job it used to drive him nuts, the supervisors and head honchos are really rough on them. And yes your right you have to be pretty smart to work for the post office, my dads high IQ got him in he said!:o)..So if all those post workers were doing delivery that day or warned to "leave" or what? It makes you wonder if they were all told to evacuate or deliver mail or what happened? Na, I'm sure they told them to get the heck out of there but it does make one wonder what happened? By the way I've also heard that some of the police would taunt women who were stuck on roofs etc..using sexual verbal abuse that they would help them if they would lift their tops off etc..etc..but this is just heresay and I wonder if some of them were actually not police "men" but if their rescue boats and such were actually stolen by vandals and those vandals were saying these things to people as they rode by them on these "stolen" boats..one wonders?

I wonder if some of the postal workers are some that decided to stay and stick it out?..the whole thing will probably take forever to figure it all out and or maybe never!..there's just too much chaos and too much that happend so fast that not all answers will be found.

Also its terrible so many of these people made homeless..but has anyone realized that there has been probably over a million(or more I don't have the stats)of homeless people already in this country before this even happened? Not all are just drunks or crazies, or drug addicts some have just had a rough life or rough breaks and they never got much help and there are less and less programs to help in communities now so many programs have been cut, since Bush has been the big CEO up there! I see quite a few homeless people every day in the city where I live its so common that if suddenly they weren't there I'm sure everyone would notice it!..on bikes, or walking big bags in baskets, they carry around of all of their belongings..and needing a bath. From time to time I will stop my car and give them a dollar or two, or talk to them or give them a candy bar, or water, because I always say to myself "one day you could end up like them so help them when you can"..I hate that a lot seem to smoke and drink so much but then I think to myself "hey what else have they got to look forward too"?...walk a mile in their "moccashoes"..just some food for thought..not all homeless people "chose to be"..

Blessings,
Rhi

I really think this is about the postal workers taking care of their families first...evacuating over the weekend like you say. What I don't understand is the not checking in..that 800 number is a number they are told to call and people who have been taken to shelters in other states have had access to a phone by now. With the benefits that go along with a Federal job you would have to think about it at some point.
Local SE Louisiana TV station WWL has been running live on the internet since before the storm hit and I've watched a lot of its coverage. The story about the women and the "Police" came from an interview I watched with one of the women and she was adamant it was men they knew to be policemen.

It's funny, Postal Workers have been going through for years what IT workers get now. The system works 360 days of the year, but people only remember the 5 days where there were problems. I don't remember the last time the post office lost a letter, but that's the image I have, until I think about it for a bit.
